Accessibility
This product is used at a counter, one-handed, often on an old tablet, by people who did not choose the software. It has to work for everyone who has to use it. Here is where we actually are.
Our target is WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We are working toward it and we do not claim to have reached it. No independent audit has been carried out. We have not published a VPAT; if you need one for procurement, write to us and we will tell you honestly what we can and cannot attest to today.
What is built
Keyboard, all the way through
Every interactive control is a real button, link, input or select — there are no click handlers on divs — so tab order follows the page and Enter and Space do what they should. Focus is visible, and a skip link is the first thing in the tab order on every page.
It reads as a document
Landmarks (header, nav, main, footer) are real elements with accessible names, headings descend without skipping levels, tables have header cells, and every form control has a label that is joined to it — not a placeholder standing in for one.
Status is never color alone
A record that has lapsed says so in words next to the color, on every screen and in every export. The provenance of a record is a sentence, not a tick. This matters for the eight per cent of men with a color vision deficiency who work behind these counters.
Built for a thumb
On touch devices every control is given a minimum target of about 44 pixels, and the header, rails and tables are laid out again rather than merely shrunk. The layout is checked at 360, 414, 768 and 1280 pixels wide as part of the build.
Text can grow
Type is set in relative units and the layout is fluid, so browser zoom and larger system text reflow the page instead of clipping it. Nothing depends on hover alone, and nothing depends on a gesture more complicated than a tap.
Motion is optional
The few animations respect prefers-reduced-motion. Nothing flashes, nothing auto-plays, nothing moves on a timer, and no page carries a time limit you can lose work to.
One language, declared
The site is published in English and every page says so, so a screen reader uses English pronunciation and hyphenation rather than guessing. It was published in five languages until September 2026; a half-maintained translation is worse for a screen-reader user than an honest single one.
No password to remember
Sign-in is a one-time code or link sent to an address. There is nothing to memorise, nothing to type twice, and no CAPTCHA in the ordinary path.
What is not there yet
We would rather list these than leave you to find them.
- No independent audit. Everything above is our own testing — automated checks in the build, and manual keyboard and screen-reader passes. It is not the same as an external conformance review, and we do not present it as one.
- Certificate photos are photos. A scanned certificate is an image of a document, and we cannot add alternative text describing dates we have not read. The dates themselves are always available as text beside the image, so the information is reachable even when the picture is not.
- Printed output. The compliance report and the printable pet card are laid out for paper. The same information is on screen as structured text; the PDF is not tagged.
- Some server-side error messages are still English even when the page around them is not. They are on the list.
- Third-party pages. Payment happens on Stripe's own checkout and wallet passes are added through Google and Apple. Those pages are theirs, and their accessibility is theirs; we chose them partly because they take it seriously, but we cannot speak for them.
If something blocks you
Write to hello@vaxcheck.app with the page and what happened — “the date field on the add-record page cannot be reached with a keyboard” is perfect. You do not need to know the standard or name a guideline.
- We reply within one business day.
- If it stops you doing something, we will tell you a workaround in that reply, and we will do the work rather than close the message.
- If you need the information on a page in another form — read out, in a larger type size, as a plain file — ask, and we will send it.
